Are You A Stayer?

Are you a Stayer?

Recently I have spent way too much time playing Words with Friends on Facebook. I tell myself, it is ok because the game helps me to improve and build my vocabulary. We find ourselves doing that from time to time, trying to justify what we are doing. However, that is another story for another time.

Anyway, in playing the game, I was examining my playing board and the letters I had to put into play. My friend had just played the word ‘STAY’. Next to it was an empty space, then an ‘R’. I am always looking to play my letters on tiles that would get me extra points. The empty space just happened to be a Double Word tile. So I checked out my available letters and I always look for ways to use ER and ED at the end of a word. Just so happens I had an “E’. I have never heard of the word STAYER, so I Googled it. The free dictionary.com defined it as:

stayer – a person or other animal having powers of endurance or perseverance; “the horse that won the race is a good stayer”

However, I like what Wikipedia had to say. See it below:

In horse racing, a stayer refers to a horse that may be a better performer over a longer distance,[1] such as more than 1-1/2 miles.

When I read this it reminded me of a quote we often here, yet it is not scriptural, “The race is not given to the swift nor the strong but to him that endures to the end.” Even though it is a pretty powerful statement, I like what Paul says in Acts 20:24, “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus–the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” In order to finish the work you have to stay the course, stay in the race and become better (mature) over a period of time. The longer your distance the more mature you become. You will become stronger in the face of adversity. You are endowed with power to endure or persevere. So are you a stayer? You may have only been in the race a short while, but will you stay? Perhaps, this journey so far is not all you hoped it would be but, will you stay the distance? God is faithful to do just what he said he would do!!! When the times get rough will you stay? He promised never to leave or forsake you….Are you a stayer?

The game as it turned out I could not play the word because a word was played under it and adding the ‘E’ it would not have been a word going down. However, I thank God for learning a new word and giving me an inspiring and encouraging word to remain stedfast and in the race!!!!
